This is the gross energy cost of the walking, not extra burn on top of what you would have spent sitting still, and it ignores pace, stride length, and incline. Walking uphill or fast pushes the real figure higher; a slow shuffle around the house pushes it lower. Wrist trackers also overcount steps from arm movement alone. Expect the estimate to land within roughly 20 to 30 percent of reality, which makes it useful for comparing one day against another rather than as a number to eat back exactly.

Converting a step count into energy

Each step costs a small, fairly consistent amount of energy relative to body weight, so multiplying step count by weight and a per-step constant gives a reasonable calorie estimate without needing pace or terrain data.

How many calories is 1,000 steps?

Roughly 40–50 calories for a 70 kg person. The per-step calorie cost is approximately 0.04 kcal per kg of body weight. So: 1,000 steps × 0.04 × 70 = 2,800 ÷ 1,000 ≈ 40 cal. A heavier person burns more; a lighter person less.

Are step counter calorie estimates accurate?

They're within 20–30% of actual burn for most people. Wrist-worn trackers tend to overcount steps (arm swing without walking) and underestimate calorie burn for activities like cycling. The estimate improves when you input accurate height and weight. Don't rely on exact numbers — use them for relative tracking.

How many steps do I need to burn 500 calories?

For a 70 kg person: roughly 10,000–12,000 steps. At ~0.04 kcal/step/kg: 500 ÷ (0.04 × 70) ≈ 178 steps per calorie × 500 = ~10,700 steps. Heavier people need fewer steps; lighter people need more. Running the same number of steps burns slightly more due to higher intensity.
