Ping tools report the round trip, so this calculator halves it. These are the round-trip readings people most often see, the one-way latency each implies, and the kind of link that usually produces it. All figures assume a symmetric path, meaning the data takes a similar route out and back.

One-way latency is simply the round trip divided by two, so it is only accurate when routing is symmetric. Satellite and some mobile paths are asymmetric and can make one direction significantly slower than the other. The connection column is a typical example, not a rule: distance sets a physical floor (light in fiber covers about 200,000 km per second, so 10,000 km costs roughly 50 ms one-way before any routing hops), while jitter and packet loss can make a low-ping link still feel worse than these ratings suggest.
Assumes a symmetric path
Halving round-trip time only gives an accurate one-way estimate if the path there and back is roughly symmetric in latency — asymmetric routing (common with satellite or some mobile connections) can make this estimate less accurate.
Why latency matters beyond raw speed
A high-bandwidth connection with high latency can still feel sluggish for real-time activity (gaming, video calls) — bandwidth determines how much data moves, latency determines how quickly a single round-trip request gets a response.
Frequently asked questions
My ping to the game server is 80 ms — what's my one-way latency?
Roughly 40 ms one-way, assuming a symmetric path. That's acceptable for most online games. Under 20 ms one-way is excellent, 20-50 ms is good, and above 75 ms one-way starts to feel laggy in fast-paced games.
Why is my ping to a server in another country so high?
Light through fiber travels at about 200,000 km/s. A 10,000 km distance has a minimum round-trip of about 100 ms just from physics, plus routing hops add more. Transoceanic pings under 150 ms are actually quite good.
Is one-way latency always exactly half the ping?
Not always. Halving the round-trip assumes symmetric routing — the data takes a similar path in both directions. Asymmetric paths (common with satellite or certain mobile networks) can make one direction significantly slower.
