4K carries four times the pixels of Full HD, not twice, because both dimensions double. That is why GPU load scales so steeply with resolution. WXGA reduces to 683:384 rather than a clean 16:9, which is why 1366x768 content is very slightly letterboxed.

Resolution name vs. actual pixel count

Marketing names like '1080p' or '4K' refer to vertical or horizontal pixel count respectively, not the total — this calculator gives the actual total pixel count, which is what determines file size and rendering workload.

More pixels means more GPU work

Rendering workload scales with total pixel count — 4K (3840×2160) has 4x the pixels of 1080p (1920×1080), which is why 4K gaming needs substantially more GPU power than 1080p at the same frame rate.

My monitor is 2560x1440 — how many megapixels is that?

2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400 pixels, or about 3.7 megapixels. That's 1.78x the pixel count of 1080p (2.07 MP), which is why 1440p gaming is noticeably more demanding on your GPU.

What resolution is '4K' exactly?

The consumer '4K' standard is 3840x2160 (8.3 megapixels). True cinema 4K (DCI) is 4096x2160. The name refers to the approximate horizontal pixel count, not vertical like the older 720p/1080p naming convention.
