Payout and implied probability from American odds

Negative odds show what you must stake to win $100; positive odds show what a $100 stake wins. Implied probability is the break-even win rate the price demands.

The standard -110 price on both sides of a bet implies 52.38% each, adding to 104.76%. That extra 4.76% is the bookmaker's margin, and it is why you must win about 52.4% of -110 bets just to break even. Gambling odds always favour the house over time. Treat any stake as money spent on entertainment, and never as an expected return.

How American odds work

Positive odds (+150) mean 'bet $100 to win $150 profit,' while negative odds (-110) mean 'bet $110 to win $100 profit' — converting to decimal odds (divide by 100, add 1 for positive; divide 100 by the absolute value, add 1 for negative) makes the math straightforward.

Implied probability and the vig

Implied probability tells you what win percentage the odds assume — but sportsbooks set odds so the implied probabilities of all outcomes sum to more than 100%, and that gap (the 'vig' or 'juice') is how they make money.

Frequently asked questions

I bet $50 at +200 odds — how much do I win?

You'd win $100 profit plus your $50 stake back, for a $150 total payout. Positive odds tell you the profit on a $100 bet, so +200 means 2:1 — scale proportionally to your actual wager.

What does -110 mean in real dollars?

You need to bet $110 to win $100 profit. This is the standard 'juice' on most point spread and over/under bets — the extra $10 is the sportsbook's commission.

How is the payout calculator different from the parlay calculator?

The payout calculator handles a single straight bet — one wager on one outcome. The parlay calculator combines multiple bets where all legs must win, multiplying the decimal odds together for a larger payout but much lower probability.

How do I convert American odds to implied probability?

For negative odds: probability = |odds| ÷ (|odds| + 100). For positive odds: probability = 100 ÷ (odds + 100). So -150 implies 60% and +200 implies 33.3%. Remember, the true probability is lower because of the vig.

Why do both sides of a bet add up to more than 100%?

That's the vig (or juice). If one side is -110 (52.4% implied) and the other is -110 (52.4% implied), they sum to 104.8%. The extra 4.8% is the sportsbook's built-in edge regardless of which side wins.
