Batting average is simply hits ÷ at-bats, displayed as a three-decimal number — a .300 average (getting a hit 30% of the time) has historically been the benchmark for an excellent hitter in Major League Baseball.
Not every plate appearance is an at-bat — walks, hit-by-pitches, sacrifices, and catcher interference don't count, which is why batting average and on-base percentage can tell very different stories about the same player.
