SleepCycle

Sleep Cycle Calculator

Sleep happens in 90-minute cycles. This tool tells you when to sleep (or wake) to land at the end of one.

Bedtimes that end on a complete sleep cycle

Sleep runs in roughly 90-minute cycles, and waking at the end of one feels easier than waking mid-cycle. These are the bedtimes that land a chosen wake-up time on a cycle boundary.

These times are the moment you fall asleep, not the moment you get into bed. Add 10 to 20 minutes if you usually take a while to drop off. Cycle length varies between 80 and 110 minutes by person and across the night.

Why cycles matter

Waking mid-cycle (especially during deep sleep) feels groggy. Waking between cycles, during a lighter sleep stage, feels naturally easy — that's why 7.5 hours can beat 8 hours.

The stages of a sleep cycle

Each 90-minute cycle has four stages: Stage 1 (light sleep, 1–5 min), Stage 2 (deeper, body temperature drops, 10–25 min), Stage 3 (deep/slow-wave sleep, physical repair, 20–40 min), and REM (dreaming, memory consolidation, 10–60 min). Deep sleep dominates early cycles; REM dominates later ones.

Frequently asked questions

What time should I go to bed if I wake up at 6 AM?

Count backward in 90-minute cycles plus 15 minutes to fall asleep. For 6 AM wake-up: 5 cycles = 7.5 hours → bed at 10:15 PM. 6 cycles = 9 hours → bed at 8:45 PM. 4 cycles = 6 hours → bed at 11:45 PM. The 5-cycle option (7.5 hours) is ideal for most adults.

How many sleep cycles do I need?

Most adults need 5–6 complete 90-minute cycles (7.5–9 hours). Teens need 6 cycles (9 hours). Older adults may need only 4–5 (6–7.5 hours). Fewer than 4 cycles consistently impairs cognitive function, immune response, and emotional regulation — even if you feel fine.

Why do I feel tired after 8 hours of sleep?

8 hours doesn't align with 90-minute cycles — you're waking mid-cycle. 7.5 hours (5 complete cycles) or 9 hours (6 cycles) align better. Also factor in the ~15 minutes it takes to fall asleep. Other causes: inconsistent sleep schedule, sleep apnea, alcohol before bed, or blue light exposure.
