Where plant-based emissions come from

Even a fully plant-based diet has a carbon footprint. Rice paddies release methane. Out-of-season produce may be air-freighted. Highly processed foods carry packaging and processing emissions. Whole, local, seasonal foods stay closer to their raw carbon cost.

Choose seasonal, local produce when possible. Prefer whole grains and pulses over pre-packaged meals. Buy in bulk to cut packaging. Cook in larger batches to spread the energy cost of stove and oven use.
