The $6,000 senior deduction as income rises
The deduction for each person aged 65 or over, which falls by 6% of modified AGI above $75,000 (single) or $150,000 (joint).
| MAGI over the threshold | Deduction per person | Single: MAGI | Joint: MAGI |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | $6,000 | $75,000 | $150,000 |
| $25,000 | $4,500 | $100,000 | $175,000 |
| $50,000 | $3,000 | $125,000 | $200,000 |
| $75,000 | $1,500 | $150,000 | $225,000 |
| $100,000 | $0 | $175,000 | $250,000 |
A couple who are both 65 or over get the amount twice. The deduction comes on top of the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint in 2026) and the extra standard deduction for age 65 ($2,050 single, $1,650 each for a couple).
The $6,000 deduction for seniors
For 2025 to 2028, each person aged 65 or older with a valid Social Security number gets an extra $6,000 deduction, on top of the standard or itemized deduction and the existing extra standard deduction for age 65 ($2,050 single, $1,650 each for a couple in 2026). It shrinks by 6% of modified AGI over $75,000 ($150,000 for a joint return): a single retiree with $100,000 of MAGI gets $4,500, and it is gone at $175,000 ($250,000 joint). Married couples must file jointly.
Is Social Security tax-free now?
The law didn't change how benefits are taxed. Up to 50% of your benefits are taxable once your provisional income (other income, tax-exempt interest and half your benefits) passes $25,000 ($32,000 joint), and up to 85% above $34,000 ($44,000 joint). What changed is the deduction against that income. A couple, both 65, with $36,000 of Social Security and $40,000 of other income has $17,900 of taxable benefits; the new deduction cuts their 2026 federal tax from $2,240 to $1,040.
Frequently asked questions
Who qualifies for the senior deduction?
Anyone who is 65 or older by the end of the tax year (born before January 2, 1962 for 2026) and has a valid Social Security number. Married couples must file jointly, and if both spouses qualify they get $6,000 each. It is available whether you take the standard deduction or itemize.
How much of my Social Security is taxable?
Add your other income, any tax-exempt interest and half your benefits. Up to $25,000 ($32,000 joint), none is taxable; between that and $34,000 ($44,000 joint), up to half; above it, up to 85%. A single retiree with $24,000 of benefits and $30,000 of other income has $11,300 of taxable benefits.
Does the senior deduction reduce taxable Social Security?
No. It is taken after your adjusted gross income is worked out, so it doesn't change how much of your benefits counts as income. It lowers taxable income instead, and with it the tax you pay on your benefits and everything else.
How does the phase-out work?
Each person's $6,000 falls by 6% of modified AGI above $75,000, or $150,000 on a joint return. At $100,000 single it is $4,500; at $125,000, $3,000; at $175,000, nothing. For a couple the same steps start at $150,000 and end at $250,000.
