RAP monthly payment by income

The Repayment Assistance Plan payment for a single borrower, and with one dependent.

AGIRateMonthly paymentWith one dependent
$10,000$10 minimum$10.00$10.00
$25,0002%$41.67$10.00
$45,0004%$150.00$100.00
$75,0007%$437.50$387.50
$120,00010%$1,000.00$950.00

The rate applies to the whole AGI: 1% for an AGI just over $10,000, one point more for each $10,000 band, 10% above $100,000. Each dependent takes $50 off, down to the $10 minimum.

How the RAP payment is set

RAP charges a share of your whole adjusted gross income, not of income above a poverty allowance: 1% for an AGI just over $10,000, one point more for each $10,000, up to 10% above $100,000, divided by 12. Each dependent takes $50 off, and the payment is never below $10. An AGI of $45,000 gives 4%, or $150 a month; with one dependent it is $100. Payments are recalculated every year from your income.

Interest waiver, principal match and forgiveness

If your payment doesn't cover the month's interest, the rest of the interest is waived, so the balance never grows. If less than $50 of principal is repaid, the Department of Education adds a match of up to $50. Anything still owed after 360 qualifying payments, 30 years, is forgiven. A $35,000 loan at 6.5% on a $45,000 AGI rising 3% a year is paid off in about 18 years and 3 months.

Frequently asked questions

How much will my RAP payment be?

Your AGI times the rate for its band, divided by 12, less $50 for each dependent, but at least $10. At $25,000 that is 2%, $41.67 a month; at $75,000, 7%, $437.50; above $100,000, 10%. A married couple filing jointly uses their combined AGI.

When did RAP start, and who can use it?

It opened on 1 July 2026. It covers Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans, Grad PLUS loans and Direct Consolidation loans, except consolidations that include a Parent PLUS loan. From July 2026 it is the main income-driven plan for new borrowers.

Is the forgiven balance taxable?

It may be. Forgiveness under income-driven plans after 2025 can count as taxable income, so a large forgiven balance could bring a tax bill in the year it is forgiven.

Can my RAP balance grow?

No. Interest your payment doesn't cover is waived, and the principal match makes sure your balance falls by at least a little each month you pay on time.
