The 12 Western tropical zodiac signs and the dates each one covers

These are the standard tropical date ranges this calculator uses to match a birthday to a sun sign, listed in zodiac order starting at the spring equinox. Element and ruling planet are the traditional attributes associated with each sign.

Sign boundaries are tied to the equinoxes and solstices, which do not land on the same calendar date every year, so a birthday within a day of a boundary can fall either side depending on the year and time of birth. Vedic and other sidereal systems use star positions instead of seasons and will usually place the same birthday one sign earlier. This gives your sun sign only, not a full birth chart.

Tropical vs. sidereal zodiac

This uses the Western tropical zodiac (based on the seasons), the system most commonly referenced in pop culture and horoscopes. Vedic/sidereal astrology uses a different system based on actual star positions, which can assign a different sign to the same birth date.

Cusp dates

If your birthday falls within a day or two of a sign boundary, you're on a 'cusp' — the exact boundary date can shift by a day depending on the year, since it's tied to solstices and equinoxes, which don't fall on the identical calendar date every year.

Frequently asked questions

My birthday is March 20 — am I Pisces or Aries?

March 20 is right on the Pisces–Aries cusp. In most years it falls under Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20), but the exact cutoff can shift by a day depending on the year. This calculator uses the standard tropical date ranges, which place March 20 in Pisces.

What's the difference between tropical and sidereal zodiac?

The tropical zodiac (used here and in most Western horoscopes) is based on Earth's seasons — Aries starts at the spring equinox. The sidereal zodiac (used in Vedic astrology) tracks actual star positions, which have drifted about 24° from the tropical signs due to precession. Your sidereal sign is often one sign earlier than your tropical sign.

Does this tell me my full birth chart?

No — this identifies only your Sun sign (the zodiac sign the Sun was in on your birthday). A full birth chart (natal chart) includes the positions of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and other planets, plus your rising sign, which requires your exact birth time and location.
