Tip and total for common restaurant bills
Each row takes the bill and adds the tip percentage in the column heading. The totals are what you hand over; the last two columns show the 20% tip on its own and the per-head share when four people split it.
| Bill | Total at 15% | At 18% | At 20% | At 25% | Tip at 20% | Each of 4 at 20% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $28.75 | $29.50 | $30.00 | $31.25 | $5.00 | $7.50 |
| $40 | $46.00 | $47.20 | $48.00 | $50.00 | $8.00 | $12.00 |
| $50 | $57.50 | $59.00 | $60.00 | $62.50 | $10.00 | $15.00 |
| $75 | $86.25 | $88.50 | $90.00 | $93.75 | $15.00 | $22.50 |
| $100 | $115.00 | $118.00 | $120.00 | $125.00 | $20.00 | $30.00 |
| $150 | $172.50 | $177.00 | $180.00 | $187.50 | $30.00 | $45.00 |
| $200 | $230.00 | $236.00 | $240.00 | $250.00 | $40.00 | $60.00 |
The 20% column is the one worth memorising, because you can do it in your head: move the decimal one place left and double it. A $75 bill gives $7.50, doubled is $15. Customary rates vary by country and by service - roughly 15 to 20 percent is standard for US table service, while in much of Europe and Asia a service charge is already included and tipping is optional or nominal. Check the bill for an existing service charge or an auto-gratuity on large parties before adding anything, and decide for yourself whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount.
Tipping etiquette (US)
Standard sit-down restaurant tip: 18–20%. Bars: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Delivery: 10–15%, $3 minimum. Tip on the pre-tax amount.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 18–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down restaurants. For exceptional service, 25%. For counter service or takeout, 10–15% is appreciated but not expected. Always tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the after-tax total.
How do I calculate a tip quickly in my head?
For 20%: move the decimal one place left (that's 10%), then double it. A $47 bill → $4.70 → $9.40 tip. For 15%: find 10%, then add half of that. $47 → $4.70 + $2.35 = $7.05.
Should I tip on tax?
Technically, you should tip on the pre-tax amount — the tip is for the service, not the tax. On a $100 bill with $8 tax, tip on $100. That said, the difference is usually small (a couple dollars), and many people just tip on the total for simplicity.
