Total race time across the three disciplines

Total time is the three legs plus both transitions. Transitions are timed and count toward your result, which people routinely forget.

Olympic15 min3 min70 min2 min55 min2:25:00

Half Ironman35 min5 min150 min4 min110 min5:04:00
Full Ironman75 min8 min330 min8 min250 min11:11:00

Transitions add 3 to 16 minutes across these examples. Shaving two minutes off T1 and T2 is usually far easier than finding the same two minutes on the bike leg.

Transitions are the fourth discipline

T1 and T2 are raced, not rested. Losing two minutes in each transition across a season costs more finishing places than most athletes gain from a winter of training, because transition time is free speed available to anyone willing to rehearse it.

Pacing the bike to protect the run

The bike leg is the longest segment in most formats, which makes it the easiest place to overspend. Riding 10 W above sustainable effort can cost several minutes on the run — projecting your total time from realistic splits, rather than best-case ones, is what keeps that in check.

Frequently asked questions

I swim 2:00/100m, bike at 30 km/h, and run 5:30/km — what's my Olympic-distance time?

Swim 1500m at 2:00/100m = 30:00, bike 40km at 30 km/h = 1:20:00, run 10km at 5:30/km = 55:00, plus ~4 min transitions = roughly 2:49:00. That's a solid mid-pack finish for an age-group triathlete.

How is the triathlon calculator different from the swimming pace calculator?

The swimming pace calculator breaks down a single swim into pace per 100m. The triathlon calculator combines all three disciplines plus transitions into one total time — it's a race-day planning tool rather than a single-sport metric.

How long should I budget for transitions?

T1 (swim-to-bike) takes 1:30-3:00 for most age-groupers — wetsuit removal is the bottleneck. T2 (bike-to-run) is faster at 1:00-2:00. Elite triathletes get through each in under 30 seconds.

What's a good Ironman finishing time?

The average Ironman finisher crosses in about 12:30-13:00. Sub-10 hours is competitive age-group, sub-9 is elite amateur, and the pros finish around 7:30-8:00. The cutoff is typically 17 hours.
