A straight-up number and a red/black bet feel completely different, but on a European wheel both give back 97.3% over the long run. Bet type changes how often you win and how much you win, never the expectation — the single zero is what creates the edge, and it applies to all of them equally.
Adding a double zero takes the wheel from 37 pockets to 38 while payouts stay identical. That one extra pocket roughly doubles the house edge from 2.7% to 5.26%, which is why a European wheel is always the better table when both are available.
