PaceMaker
Pace Calculator
Three modes: solve for pace, distance, or finish time. Works in miles and kilometres.
Running pace for common race times
The pace you need to hold to finish each distance in a given time, shown per kilometre and per mile.
| Race | Finish time | Pace per km | Pace per mile |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5K | 20:00 | 4:00 | 6:26 |
| 5K | 25:00 | 5:00 | 8:03 |
| 5K | 30:00 | 6:00 | 9:39 |
| 10K | 40:00 | 4:00 | 6:26 |
| 10K | 50:00 | 5:00 | 8:03 |
| 10K | 60:00 | 6:00 | 9:39 |
| Half marathon | 1:30:00 | 4:16 | 6:52 |
| Half marathon | 1:45:00 | 4:59 | 8:01 |
| Half marathon | 2:00:00 | 5:41 | 9:09 |
| Marathon | 3:00:00 | 4:16 | 6:52 |
| Marathon | 3:30:00 | 4:59 | 8:01 |
| Marathon | 4:00:00 | 5:41 | 9:09 |
Half marathon is 21.0975 km and marathon is 42.195 km, so a marathon at half-marathon pace doubles the time exactly.
Pace charts for popular distances
A 5 min/km pace finishes a 10K in 50 minutes, a half-marathon in 1:45:30, and a marathon in 3:30:59. Use this tool to chart your own targets.
Negative splits for better race results
Running the second half faster than the first (negative split) is how most marathon records are set. Start 10–15 seconds per km slower than your target pace, then gradually increase. This prevents early fatigue and leads to faster overall times than starting too fast and fading.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my running pace?
Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance. If you run 5K in 25 minutes: 25 ÷ 5 = 5:00 per km (or 8:03 per mile). To find finish time from pace: Finish Time = Pace × Distance. At 6:00/km, a half marathon (21.1 km) takes 2:06:36.
What is a good running pace for beginners?
Beginner runners typically run 6:30–8:00 per km (10:30–13:00 per mile). A good goal for a first 5K is under 35 minutes (7:00/km). Don't worry about pace early on — being able to run continuously matters more. Most improvement comes in the first 6 months of consistent training.
How do I convert pace from min/km to min/mile?
Multiply min/km by 1.609. A 5:00/km pace = 8:03/mile. A 6:00/km pace = 9:39/mile. Going the other way: divide min/mile by 1.609. An 8:00/mile pace = 4:58/km.
