Switch between a price before GST and the GST-inclusive total, common in Australia, Canada, India, and other GST countries.

Price including GST at common rates

Each cell adds the GST rate in the column heading to the base price. India's slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent sit across this range; Australia, New Zealand and Singapore use a single rate.

India applies GST in slabs by product category rather than one national rate - broadly 5% on essentials, 12% and 18% on most goods and services, and 28% on luxury and demerit goods, sometimes with an additional cess. For a supply within one state the total splits equally into CGST and SGST, so an 18% rate is 9% each; for a supply across states it is a single IGST at the full rate. That split affects how the invoice is drawn, not the total the customer pays. To remove GST from a gross figure, divide by one plus the rate rather than subtracting the percentage. Registered businesses claim input tax credit on GST paid to suppliers.

GST vs. VAT

GST and VAT are functionally the same idea — a consumption tax collected at each stage of the supply chain — just branded differently by country. The math in this calculator works identically for either.

Multiple GST rates

Some countries split GST into multiple slabs (e.g. reduced rates for essentials, standard rates for most goods) — always confirm which rate applies to your specific product or service before relying on a single flat calculation.

India's GST slab structure

India uses four main GST rates: 5% (essential items — edible oil, sugar, tea), 12% (processed food, phones, fertilizers), 18% (most goods and services — electronics, restaurants, haircuts), and 28% (luxury items — cars, tobacco, aerated drinks). Some items are GST-exempt (fresh vegetables, milk, education). CGST and SGST split the rate equally between central and state governments for intra-state sales.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on a product?

Multiply the net price by the GST rate. For 18% GST on ₹1,000: GST = ₹1,000 × 0.18 = ₹180. Total price = ₹1,180. For CGST/SGST split: CGST = ₹90 (9%), SGST = ₹90 (9%). For interstate sales, IGST = ₹180 (18%).

How do I extract GST from a total price?

Divide the GST-inclusive price by (1 + GST rate). For 18% GST: ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 net price. GST amount = ₹1,180 − ₹1,000 = ₹180. Never just subtract 18% from the total — that gives the wrong answer (₹967.40 instead of ₹1,000).

What is the GST rate in India, Australia, and Canada?

India: 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% depending on the product category. Australia: flat 10% GST on most goods and services (food, healthcare, and education are exempt). Canada: 5% federal GST plus 0-10% provincial PST depending on the province (or combined HST of 13-15% in some provinces).
