Square Area Calculator

Area (side × side) and perimeter (4 × side) from a single input.

Square area and perimeter by side length

Area is the side squared; perimeter is four times the side.

The side of 4 is the only row where area and perimeter share a number, since s squared equals 4s only at s = 4. Below that the perimeter is the larger figure and above it the area pulls away rapidly, because area scales with the square of the side while perimeter scales linearly. That is worth remembering when scaling anything up: doubling a room's dimensions doubles the skirting board but quadruples the flooring.

The simplest area formula

A square is a rectangle where every side is equal, so area = side × side = s² — the same rectangle formula, just with one input instead of two.

Why it's useful

Tile and flooring calculations, garden plot sizing, and any DIY project with a square footprint reduce to this single measurement.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the area of a square?

Area = side × side (s²). A square with side 8 feet has area 64 square feet. If you know the diagonal instead: Area = d²/2. A square with diagonal 10 has area 50.

How many square feet in a square yard?

9 square feet. A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9. A 180 sq ft room = 20 sq yd.

How do I find the side length from the area?

Side = √Area. If a square room is 144 square feet, each side is √144 = 12 feet. For the diagonal: side = diagonal / √2.
