Boer formula LBM in kg from weight and height.

Lean body mass by weight and height

Lean body mass is everything that is not fat: muscle, bone, organs, and water. These figures use the Boer formula, which takes weight, height, and sex.

Everything that isn't fat

Lean body mass includes muscle, bone, organs, and water — essentially total body weight minus fat mass — and the Boer formula estimates it from just height, weight, and sex without needing a body-fat measurement first.

Why it's useful

Lean mass is often used to set more accurate protein and calorie targets than total body weight alone, since it's your metabolically active tissue driving most of your calorie needs.

Frequently asked questions

What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass (LBM) is your total weight minus fat mass — it includes muscle, bone, organs, blood, and water. For most men, LBM is 75–85% of total weight; for women, 65–75%. Unlike body fat percentage, LBM tells you how much functional tissue you carry.

How accurate is the Boer formula?

The Boer formula estimates LBM from height, weight, and sex with reasonable accuracy for average body compositions. It's less accurate for very lean athletes (underestimates) or obese individuals (overestimates lean mass). For precision, DEXA scans measure LBM directly with ±1–2% accuracy.

Why base protein intake on lean body mass?

Lean mass is metabolically active tissue that actually uses protein. Setting protein targets per kg of LBM (typically 1.6–2.2 g/kg LBM) is more accurate than per kg of total weight, especially for overweight individuals whose fat mass doesn't need protein for maintenance.
