DA rise from 58% to 60% (1 January 2026) at common basic pay
The monthly rise and three months of arrears (January to March 2026) at the entry basic pay of several 7th Pay Commission levels, before any NPS or UPS contribution.
| Basic pay | Rise a month | Arrears, 3 months | Rise a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rs. 18,000 | Rs. 360 | Rs. 1,080 | Rs. 4,320 |
| Rs. 25,500 | Rs. 510 | Rs. 1,530 | Rs. 6,120 |
| Rs. 35,400 | Rs. 708 | Rs. 2,124 | Rs. 8,496 |
| Rs. 56,100 | Rs. 1,122 | Rs. 3,366 | Rs. 13,464 |
| Rs. 78,800 | Rs. 1,576 | Rs. 4,728 | Rs. 18,912 |
| Rs. 1,23,100 | Rs. 2,462 | Rs. 7,386 | Rs. 29,544 |
Each figure is basic x 2% per month. The same works for pensioners, with basic pension in place of basic pay and dearness relief in place of DA. Employees in NPS or UPS have 10% of the arrears credited to their pension account instead of paid out.
How DA arrears are worked out
Dearness allowance is a percentage of basic pay, and dearness relief the same percentage of basic pension. When the rate rises, your pay rises by basic x the increase. The Cabinet usually approves the January and July rates a few months late, so the months already paid at the old rate are paid later as arrears. On a basic of Rs. 56,100, the rise from 58% to 60% from 1 January 2026 is Rs. 1,122 a month, so three months of arrears come to Rs. 3,366.
Recent DA rates
DA for central government employees, and DR for pensioners, was 50% from 1 January 2024, 53% from 1 July 2024, 55% from 1 January 2025, 58% from 1 July 2025 and 60% from 1 January 2026. If you are in NPS or UPS, your 10% contribution is also taken from the arrears, because contributions are a share of basic + DA. Arrears are taxed as salary in the year they are paid.
Frequently asked questions
What is the current DA rate for central government employees?
60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026, approved by the Cabinet in April 2026, up from 58%. Pensioners get dearness relief at the same rate. The rate for 1 July 2026 had not been announced when this page was last updated.
How do I calculate DA arrears?
Multiply your basic pay by the rise in the rate, then by the months already paid at the old rate. For Rs. 30,000 basic and a 2-point rise: 30,000 x 2% = Rs. 600 a month; for January to March that is Rs. 1,800 of arrears.
Is NPS deducted from DA arrears?
Yes. Under NPS and UPS the employee contributes 10% of basic + DA, so 10% of the DA arrears goes to your account, and the government adds its share. Under the old pension scheme nothing is deducted for pension.
When does the DA rate change?
Twice a year, from 1 January and 1 July, based on the All-India Consumer Price Index for industrial workers. The decision is usually announced in March or April for January, and in September to November for July.
