Speed is not a fixed trait: dense technical or legal material drags everyone down toward 100 to 200 WPM, while light fiction runs faster than the same reader's textbook pace, so time yourself on material like the material you actually have to get through. Above roughly 400 WPM comprehension usually starts to drop, and claims past 700 WPM are generally skimming rather than reading. The 300-page book figure assumes continuous reading with no re-reading, notes, or breaks, which no real reading session looks like.
