Compare rows three and four: strong homework cannot rescue a weak final when the final carries half the grade, and a 92% final pulls a 78% midterm up more than a perfect homework score does. Your syllabus may split the weights differently, add categories such as labs, quizzes, or participation, or drop your lowest score - enter your own categories above. Letter grades use the standard cutoffs (A at 93%, B+ at 87%, B at 83%, and so on), which vary by instructor, and some courses round or curve the final number.

How weighted averages work

A weighted average multiplies each score by its weight, sums the products, then divides by the total weight. If homework (92%) is worth 20% and the final (78%) is worth 50%, the weighted average = (92×20 + 78×50 + …) / total weight. This rewards performance in higher-weighted categories.

What if weights don't add to 100%

If your weights total more or less than 100%, the calculator normalizes by dividing the weighted sum by the actual total weight. This gives the same result as if weights were rescaled to 100% — so partial-semester calculations still work correctly.
