PM Surya Ghar subsidy by system size
Central financial assistance under MNRE's guidelines for residential rooftop solar, with the units each size makes at about 4 units a day per kW.
| System size | Subsidy (most states) | Subsidy (special category states) | Units a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | Rs. 30,000 | Rs. 33,000 | 122 |
| 1.5 kW | Rs. 45,000 | Rs. 49,500 | 183 |
| 2 kW | Rs. 60,000 | Rs. 66,000 | 243 |
| 2.5 kW | Rs. 69,000 | Rs. 75,900 | 304 |
| 3 kW | Rs. 78,000 | Rs. 85,800 | 365 |
| 4 kW | Rs. 78,000 | Rs. 85,800 | 487 |
| 5 kW | Rs. 78,000 | Rs. 85,800 | 608 |
The subsidy is Rs. 30,000 a kW for the first 2 kW and Rs. 18,000 for the third (Rs. 33,000 and Rs. 19,800 in the North East, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep), and stops at 3 kW. States may add more. Units vary with place, roof and shade; 4 a day per kW is a planning figure, not a guarantee.
How the subsidy is worked out
MNRE's guidelines for PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana give homes a central subsidy (CFA) of Rs. 30,000 a kW for the first 2 kW and Rs. 18,000 for the third kW, with nothing more beyond 3 kW, so the most a household gets is Rs. 78,000. In the special category states (the North East including Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep) the rates are Rs. 33,000 and Rs. 19,800, up to Rs. 85,800. The guidelines' own examples: 1.5 kW gets Rs. 45,000, 2.5 kW gets Rs. 69,000. States may add their own subsidy on top.
Working out the payback
Payback is what you pay after the subsidy divided by the yearly saving on your bill. A 3 kW system at Rs. 60,000 a kW costs Rs. 1,80,000, or Rs. 1,02,000 after the Rs. 78,000 subsidy. At about 4 units a day per kW it makes around 365 units a month, worth Rs. 30,660 a year at Rs. 7 a unit, so it pays back in about 3.3 years. Panels must keep over 80% of their output for 25 years under the scheme's specifications, so most of the system's life is pure saving.
Frequently asked questions
How much subsidy will I get for a 3 kW rooftop solar system?
Rs. 78,000 in most states: Rs. 30,000 × 2 kW plus Rs. 18,000 for the third kW. In the special category states it is Rs. 85,800. A bigger system gets no more central subsidy, though some states add their own.
What size of system do I need?
Divide the units you use in a month by about 120, the units a 1 kW system makes in a month at around 4 units a day. A home using 300 units a month needs roughly 2.5 kW; 1 to 2 kW suits up to 150 to 250 units. Output varies with your location, roof direction and shade, so check the installer's estimate.
Who can get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
Households with their own electricity connection, for a grid-connected system on their roof, terrace, balcony or an elevated structure, applying through the national portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in with a registered vendor. The panels must be made in India from Indian cells; a system with imported modules gets no subsidy. Housing societies and RWAs can get Rs. 18,000 a kW for common facilities, up to 3 kW per house and 500 kW in all.
When is the subsidy paid?
After the system is installed and the DISCOM has inspected it and fitted a net meter. The subsidy then goes to the bank account you registered on the portal. You pay the vendor the full price first, unless you take one of the low-interest loans offered through the portal.
