Reading time assumes 250 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for speaking aloud. Pages assume 500 words per double-spaced page.

50,000 words is the usual threshold for a short novel. Speaking time matters for talks: a 20-minute conference slot is roughly 2,600 words, far less than most people draft.

Reading-time math

Average adult silent reading speed is ~238 words per minute for non-fiction, ~260 for fiction. We use 230 WPM as a sensible default — actual speed depends on the reader and material.
