MPH to KM/H Converter

Converting miles per hour to kilometres per hour uses exactly the same factor as converting miles to kilometres: 1.609344. Speed is distance divided by time, and since the time units are identical on both sides, only the distance conversion applies. Multiply the mph figure by 1.609344, or by 1.6 for a quick estimate accurate to better than one per cent.

Driving abroad is the obvious context and the one with real consequences. The United States and United Kingdom sign roads in miles per hour while almost everywhere else uses kilometres per hour, so a driver crossing that boundary faces unfamiliar numbers on every sign. The common limits convert to recognisable figures: 30 mph is 48 km/h, 55 mph is 89 km/h, and 70 mph is 113 km/h.

The direction of the error matters. A driver from a mph country reading a 100 km/h sign as though it were a familiar number will travel far slower than permitted, which is inconvenient but safe. The dangerous mistake runs the other way — a driver used to km/h seeing a 70 mph limit and treating it as 70 km/h would be travelling at well over the limit if they applied their instinct in reverse. Since speed enforcement in most countries is automated and tolerances are narrow, converting deliberately rather than by feel is worth the effort.

Most vehicles sold internationally display both scales on the speedometer, with one in larger figures and the other in smaller, precisely because of this problem. Where a vehicle shows only one, rental cars in particular, it is worth establishing which before setting off — and noting that modern digital displays can often be switched between units in the settings.
