The cup is not standardised internationally: the US cup is 236.6 mL, the metric cup used in Australia and much of Europe is 250 mL, and the older UK cup was 284 mL. A recipe calling for cups without saying which will be around 6% out if you guess wrong. The larger problem is that cups measure volume while baking depends on weight - a cup of flour can vary by 20% depending on whether it was scooped or spooned, which is why serious baking recipes give grams.
