Sale price and real savings on common single and stacked discounts
Each row applies the first discount to the original price, then applies any second coupon to the already reduced price, exactly as a checkout does. The effective discount column is the total saving measured against the original price.

Stacked discounts multiply rather than add, so 30% off followed by 20% off is 44% off in total, not 50%. The gap widens as the individual discounts get bigger. Percentage columns follow the ratio only, so 25% off $120 and 25% off $1,200 both save exactly a quarter. These figures are before sales tax, shipping and any minimum-spend condition attached to the coupon, and the order the two codes are applied in does not change the final price.
Stacked discounts ≠ added discounts
30% off, then an extra 20% off, is NOT 50% off. It's 30% off, then 20% off the reduced price = 44% off total.
Frequently asked questions
A $200 jacket is 30% off, plus an extra 15% with a coupon — what's the final price?
First discount: $200 × 0.70 = $140. Second discount on the reduced price: $140 × 0.85 = $119. Total effective discount: ($200 − $119) / $200 = 40.5%, not 45%. Stacked discounts always give less than the sum of the individual percentages.
What's a better deal: 25% off or $50 off a $180 item?
25% off $180 = $45 savings (final price $135). $50 off = $50 savings (final price $130). The flat $50 is better here. But for a $250 item, 25% off = $62.50 savings, beating the $50. The breakpoint is $200 — above that, percentage wins.
How do I calculate the original price from a sale price and discount percentage?
Original = sale price / (1 − discount/100). If something is $75 after 25% off: $75 / 0.75 = $100 original price. Don't add the percentage to the sale price — that gives $93.75, which is wrong.
