A 3 lb item in a 12 x 10 x 8 box is billed as 7 lb, more than double. The divisor matters as much as the box: 139 is the standard for domestic ground, and moving to 166 cuts the same shipment from 7 lb to 6 lb. Shrinking the box is usually the cheapest shipping saving available.
