Each row runs the standard formula HP = torque x RPM / 5,252 on a torque figure and the engine speed it is measured at, then converts the result to kilowatts (HP x 0.7457). The engine labels describe typical spec-sheet combinations, not any one model.

Horsepower depends entirely on the RPM at which the torque is measured, which is why the diesel row makes huge torque but modest power and the sport bike does the opposite. At exactly 5,252 RPM the two figures are always equal. These are crank figures straight from the formula, not wheel horsepower: a drivetrain typically absorbs 10 to 15 percent before the power reaches the ground, so a chassis dyno will read lower.
Why 5,252 is the magic number
HP = Torque × RPM / 5,252. The constant comes from unit conversion: 1 HP = 33,000 ft·lbs/min, and dividing by 2π gives 5,252. At exactly 5,252 RPM, horsepower and torque are always equal — below that RPM torque is higher, above it horsepower is higher.
Torque vs horsepower
Torque is rotational force — it determines acceleration from a stop and towing capacity. Horsepower is torque sustained over time — it determines top speed and high-RPM performance. Diesel trucks have high torque at low RPM; sport bikes have high horsepower at high RPM.

My engine makes 350 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM — what's the horsepower?
About 267 HP (350 x 4,000 / 5,252). Horsepower depends on the RPM at which torque is measured — the same 350 lb-ft at 6,000 RPM would produce 400 HP.
Why do horsepower and torque always cross at 5,252 RPM?
Because of the unit conversion constant: HP = Torque x RPM / 5,252. At exactly 5,252 RPM, the formula simplifies to HP = Torque. Below that RPM, torque is always the larger number; above it, horsepower is.
Is more torque or more horsepower better?
It depends on the application. Torque matters for towing, hauling, and low-speed acceleration (trucks, off-road). Horsepower matters for top speed and sustained high-RPM performance (sports cars, racing). Most daily driving benefits from a balance of both.
