The last row is the point of the table: forty hours in the air outweighs a year of driving and household electricity combined. Grid intensity varies enormously by country, from near zero on hydro or nuclear grids to over 0.7 kg/kWh on coal.

Actual emissions vary by local electricity grid mix, vehicle efficiency, and flight class — this gives a useful order-of-magnitude estimate for comparing choices (like driving vs. flying) rather than a precise personal audit.

Frequently asked questions

I use 900 kWh of electricity per month, drive 1,000 miles, and fly 4 hours — what is my monthly carbon footprint?

Roughly: 900 × 0.42 kg (US average grid) + 1000 × 0.40 kg (average car) + 4 × 250 kg (flight) = 378 + 400 + 1000 = about 1,778 kg CO2. Flying dominates even at only 4 hours.

How is this different from the water footprint calculator?

Carbon footprint measures CO2 emissions from energy use and transport. Water footprint measures the hidden water consumed to produce goods. Both quantify environmental impact but track entirely different resources.

Which has the bigger impact: switching to LED bulbs or driving less?

Driving less typically saves more CO2. Replacing 10 incandescent bulbs with LEDs saves about 50-80 kg CO2/year. Eliminating 5,000 miles of driving saves about 2,000 kg CO2/year — roughly 25 times more.

Do emission factors change by country?

Significantly. France (mostly nuclear) emits about 0.06 kg CO2/kWh; India (mostly coal) emits about 0.82 kg CO2/kWh. This calculator uses typical average factors — adjust mentally based on your country's energy mix.
