Pick the waste factor by how the boards run and how complex the room is: 5 percent for a plain rectangle with boards running the long way, 10 percent for a normal room, and 15 percent for diagonal installs, closets, bays, or a random-length pack that leaves awkward offcuts. Flooring ships in cartons of a fixed square footage, so round the result up to whole cartons rather than buying the exact figure. Keep two or three spare cartons rather than returning them: species, stain and grain from a later production run rarely match, and boards from the same batch will patina with the floor. Solid and engineered hardwood use the same quantity math, so this figure applies to either.

Solid vs. engineered hardwood

This calculator estimates quantity the same way for both, but solid hardwood typically costs more and can't be installed over concrete or with radiant heat as easily as engineered hardwood — factor that into your material choice, not just quantity.

Board length variation affects waste

Random-length board packs naturally produce more usable offcuts than fixed-length packs — a 10% waste factor is a reasonable default, but complex room shapes with lots of jogs may need more.

My room is 14x16 ft — how much hardwood flooring should I order?

224 sq ft plus 10% waste = about 246 sq ft. Order 250 sq ft to account for cuts, defective boards, and future repair stock. Complex room shapes with closets and hallways may need 12-15% waste.

What's the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Both need the same quantity — this calculator works for either. Solid hardwood is 3/4-inch thick real wood throughout. Engineered has a real wood veneer over plywood layers, making it more stable for basements, concrete subfloors, and radiant heat.

Should I order extra boards for future repairs?

Yes — keep 2-3 extra cartons if possible. Matching wood species, stain, and grain pattern from a different production run is very difficult. The extra boards also age and patina-match your floor over time.

How does this relate to the tile calculator?

Same concept — area divided by material coverage plus waste — but different waste factors. Tile waste depends on layout pattern; hardwood waste depends on board lengths and room shape. Both calculators add your chosen waste percentage automatically.
